A Beautiful piece of work that could help many people.... February 26, 2010 Michelle A. Burke (Los Angeles, CA) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I was given this book to read, and at first I have to say I wasn't too excited about it. It seemed at face value a bit "new age" for me. But once I started reading this absolutely beautifully written and compelling book, I could feel the peace wash over me. The two authors are both honest throughout, and their reflections and poetry were just wow. From the cover, to the peaceful way the book is laid out for view, it fills one with amazing hope, and the friendship of the two ladies is indeed inspiring.
A Delightful and Inspiring Surprise February 26, 2010 Patricia Volonakis Davis (Bay Area, CA) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
When my publisher asked me to review this book and give it a blurb for the cover, I thought, "Uh,oh. A memoir about beating breast cancer? Two middle-aged women writing together? They're joking - right? How am I supposed to write anything resembling a sincere blurb on subject that's been done to death? And sprinkled throughout with poetry, on top?"
Boy, was I pleasantly, pleasantly surprised. And so, it was with the utmost sincerity that I was able to give this book a five star review here, and a quote for its cover.
Cathy Edgett writes about her experience with breast cancer that, while never minimizing or trivializing the trauma she went through, illustrates how even a life-threatening disease can be,(if we let it) an experience that changes our perceptions of ourselves, our bodies, and our lives for the better. Her co-author, Jane Flint, is courageously frank and never a martyr (thank goodness) about how the experience of helping Cathy through her ordeal by writing with her each morning, was not only NOT easy, but at times truly challenged her own perceptions of herself AND their friendship.
If you know anyone who has suffered through an illness, or is struggling with one now, or if you are the caregiver for this person, I SO urge you to read this book. I get choked up now as I think about it - the sheer 'moxy' of the women who wrote it, their voices and their poetry startlingly vivid and moving. I am proud to have been a small part of it.

Breast Strokes March 8, 2010 D. Larsen 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
When I ordered this book I was just looking for something that would address the perspective of a friend, dealing with the illness of someone they care about. I wasn't really sure what I was getting into with Breast Strokes. But as soon as I started reading I found myself pulled into the inner life of someone actually dealing with what is certainly one of life's most challenging curveballs. Turned out, I couldn't put it down without wanting to know,"what next?" It is much, much more than a cancer book. It is a life guide; a vision of a struggle;something to linger over and absorb. I got more out of it than I had bargained for. My thanks to the authors for sharing what was so personal in order for the rest of us to share in feelings that are so universal!
Not just a book about breast cancer..... March 15, 2010 Ellen Sennewald (El Cerrito, CA United States) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This book is a treasure for any of us who are faced with life's biggest challenges--Cathy's courage and Jane's constant friendship form the background for an account of the healing strength of moment to moment unflinching awareness and presence in the face of the difficulties of breast cancer treatment. Despite the subject, the combination of Cathy's luminous prose and the poetry of both Cathy and Jane provide a sense of the spacious awareness, and hope that carried them both through the process. It's truly an inspiring read, and one to return to again and again.
Breast Strokes: An Inspiring Read April 19, 2010 julie writes (Southern Utah, USA) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This book is not an easy read. It is a treacherous, mountain journey that took me where I didn't want to go - but it left me expanded and filled me with more than I knew I had. It is a book to be savored, pondered, and shared with those you love. It is a book that leaves you better than you were before you read it. This is a book that will never be thrown away because of the things you learn from reading it - as well as the beautiful poetry it contains.
Everyone has trials. Cathy and Jane had the savvy with words to share their journey. This is a book I am thankful to have.
